Exhibition at the Aquarium

From april 25th to august 31st 2011, the Aquarium will propose this special exhibition celebrating one of the very few natural colorants extracted from an animal and marine biological source. The names it has been given in Classical Antiquity – «divine purple », « imperial purple », «royal purple », show the symbolical power and prestige of this dye in the ancient civilisations of the Mediterranean. But the fascination for purple and the mysterious way in which its unique, permanent colour rapidly develops in sunlight, reaches far beyond that part of the world. The present exhibition enhances the global dimension of purple and its long-lasting importance in humankind’s history.

It is an invitation

  • to discover what exactly genuine purple is, where it comes from, how it is produced, what its uses are.
  • to meet the main species of marine molluscs that have provided purple dyes and pigments to the ancient people living around the Mediterranean and along the European coasts of the Atlantic.
  • to observe the rich, varied colours of the purple dyes obtained by many different people, living far away from each other, on the coasts of seas and oceans all around the world.
  • to admire the works of purple-lovers, scientists and artists, inspired by these colours born from sea, air and light : the Banyuls Oceanological Observatory generously lends documents from the 19th century zoologist Henri de Lacaze-Duthiers’ archives, stains and photos obtained on the Atlantic coast with purple pigments from the local Muricid species; the Japanese scholar and artist Takako Terada exhibits some of her work and personal collection of purple-dyed textiles from Japan and Latin America and Inge Boesken Kanold exhibits a selection of her unique purple and seawater paintings.

Exhibition at the Museum

This Symposium offers the opportunity of visiting the wonderful collections of the Museum of Natural History of La Rochelle from the point of view of natural colorants.
The curator and team of the Museum, in collaboration with Dominique Cardon, have conceived a way to visit the museum that highlights documents and themes connected with natural colorants :

  • on the ground floor, the presentation of the flora and fauna of local wetlands and seashores includes some wild dye plants and the 3 species of purple-producing Muricids, two indigenous and one intrusive ;
  • on the 1st floor : drawings and paintings of dye plants and animals, seashell collections (including many purple-giving species) and some exceptional historic tapas (bark cloth - a favourite medium for natural dyeing among several indigenous civilisations), have been brought back by the great scientists and explorers that illustrated the region and the City of La Rochelle in the XVIIIth and XIXth centuries.
  • on the 2nd floor : objects of great cultural importance from many civilisations around the world enhance how widespread knowledge associated with natural colorants was; dyes in several textiles and ornaments from Oceanian civilisations have been analyzed especially for the symposium;

During the Symposium, a guided visit of the museum will be proposed to participants as one of the features of the excursions of wednesday, April 27 in the morning.
General public will also have free access to this information during special visits organised from april 26 until the end of october, as part of the International Year of Chemistry. A guide describing the objects concerning natural dyes in the Museum collections is published.
