  • Experimental archaeology
  • Surviving traditions in the use of natural dyes and colorants, dyeing and colouring processes from different regions of the world.

II. Advances in natural sciences and biochemistry of dye sources
  • Scientific studies of traditional dye sources and identification of those that are poorly known;
  • Identification, and study of the potential, of interesting “new” sources of colorants: for example, waste products of plants with other primary uses;
  • Dye- and medicinal plants (i.e. the relationship between colouring power and biological activity).
III. Advances in technology
  • Advances in agronomy: optimisation of cultivation methods for historical dye crops and experiments in the cultivation of species of wild dye plants, with the aim of minimising the environmental impact of such crops;
  • Advances in techniques for the production of dyes and pigments: experiments with eco-friendly extraction technologies;
